Robotic Surgery

More Precise Surgery, Less Scarring, Quicker Recovery
That’s why we’re here.

Robotic Surgery is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. Your doctor controls the system, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body. Though it is called robotic surgery, the machine cannot act on its own – the surgery is performed entirely by your doctor.

Robotic technology allows your doctor to perform complex procedures through just a few tiny openings. As a result, you may be able to get back to your daily routine faster, without the usual recovery following major surgery.

Robotic Surgery has been used successfully worldwide in hundreds of thousands of procedures to date and is now available right here in Logan.

Is Robotic Surgery Right For You?

The decision of whether or not a surgery is performed with robotic assistance is made by you, the patient, along with input from the surgeon. The surgeon walks each patient through all of the surgical options for their condition, including open surgery, traditional laparoscopic surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery. Once the patient has information on each of these options, he or she can make an informed decision that best suits their unique situation.

Benefits of choosing robotic surgery include: less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recoveries, quicker return to normal activities, less risk of infection, less blood loss and fewer blood transfusions, less scarring, and fewer wound complications.

Less Really IS More

Smaller incisions, less blood loss, shorter length of recovery and hospital stay, plus lower rates of infection – with new robotic technology in our operating rooms, less really is more.

At Logan Regional Medical Center, we're committed to providing innovative and safe alternatives to traditional open surgery, whenever possible. Whether we're using state-of-the-art robotic-assisted technology, minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, or 3D planning functionality for precision and accuracy, we want you to explore and understand all of your options.

While minimally invasive surgery effectively reduces recovery time and gives surgeons greater control, it may not be for everyone. Sometimes, traditional open surgery provides surgeons better access to the area to be treated, and sometimes a patient's age, physical condition, and surgical history may necessitate open surgery.

Robotic Surgery FAQ

Gynecological Robotic Surgical Procedures

When medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions.

Traditional open gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, has for many years been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. Yet open surgery can come with significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process, and a threat to surrounding organs and nerves. For women facing gynecologic surgery, the period of pain, discomfort, and extended time away from normal daily activities that usually follows traditional surgery can understandably cause significant anxiety.

Fortunately, less invasive options are available. Some gynecologic procedures enable surgeons to access the target anatomy using a vaginal approach, which may not require an external incision. But for complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option. Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci ® System can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.

Overall, use of robotic surgery over standard open surgery offers patients the potential benefits of:

  • Less blood loss
  • Low conversion rate to open surgery
  • Fewer complications
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller incisions for minimal scarring
  • A faster return to normal daily activities

Robotic Assisted General Surgery

The new surgical robot, located tableside in the operating room, allows a surgeon's hand movements to be scaled, filtered, and translated into precise movements of microinstruments at the surgical site. From a console inside the operating room and near the patient, the surgeon conducts the procedure using the da Vinci system, which precisely translates his/her hand movements to the robot. The magnified, high-resolution, three-dimensional view the surgeon experiences enables him/her to perform precise and complex surgery through very small surgical incisions.

The robotic surgical system is a tool that utilizes advanced, robotic technologies to assist your surgeon with your operation. It does not act on its own, and its movements are controlled by your surgeon. The surgeon is 100% in control of the robotic-assisted system. The robotic surgical system has a 3D high definition (3D-HD) vision system, special instruments, and computer software that allow your surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity, and control. The 3D-HD image can be magnified up to 10 times so your surgeon has a close-up view of the area he or she is operating on. The robotic instruments have mechanical wrists that bend and rotate to mimic the movements of the human wrist – allowing your surgeon to make small, precise movements inside your body. And, robotic software can minimize the effects of a surgeon's hand tremors on instrument movements. The robotic surgical system is an effective, minimally invasive alternative to both open surgery and laparoscopy.

Robotic surgeries performed by surgeons at Logan Regional Medical Center include:

  • Colon surgeries
  • Gallbladder removal
  • Hernia repair
