Digitalized imaging called picture archiving and communication system (PACS) has moved LRMC well ahead of other area hospitals, including those in Huntington and Charleston.

Prior to the PACS system LRMC had a problem shared by most hospitals. All imaging studies were only in hard copy (film and paper). Efficiency suffered because images had to be requested and retrieved, and only one person at a time could view them. Often reports were misplaced or not returned by the users, leading to incomplete records. Patients, too, were inconvenienced. The many steps involved in imaging, interpreting the image, dictating a report and communicating the report to the patients physician could take several days, which increased the patients' anxiety about the results and delayed the next stage of their care.

This new system allows immediate viewing of the image and quicker review by a physician. The image can also be viewed by physicians off-site or a CD can be sent and accessed on their computers.

Nancy Godby, RT ( R) Director of Radiology, is a driving force behind the advancement of radiology services at LRMC. "The entire department has been upgraded, but the PAC system is really state of the art," she says.

The Medical Staff of the Radiology Department are either board eligible or certified by the American Board of Radiology. The technical staff of the Radiology Department are either Registry eligible or Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and are licensed by the State of West Virginia Board of Licensure for Radiologic Technologists.

The Radiology Department of Logan Regional Medical Center provides services 24 hours daily by maintaining both staff and on-call services for all areas. It is the goal of the Radiology Department to provide prompt, courteous and professional services to all patients. We recognize the fact that patients have a choice in the selection of their health care providers, and are honored by their decision to choose our facilities.

We are in compliance with State and Federal Regulations with annual inspections conducted to review practices and records.

A full array of services both in the various areas of the Department and by utilization of a mobile unit as needed for patients admitted for care are provided. Mobile images can be achieved through imaging with mobile X-Ray units in patient rooms and in surgery, as well as mobile Fluoroscopy units in the Endoscopy Suite and Surgery Suites.

Exams are done daily at the request of the patient's health care provider in all areas of the Radiology Department.

Computed Tomography (CT)
Patients are transported to the Computed Tomography Department to allow for the completion of their examinations and returned to their room by the Radiology Department's Patient Transporter and/or Radiologic Technologists. Examinations are taken by a Radiologic Technologist with specialized training in Computed Tomography technology and presented for interpretation to the Radiologist. Reports of examinations are forwarded electronically to the patient's physician or health care provider and to the nursing station for placement in the patient's medical record. The Computed Tomography Department is staffed and/or on call 24 hours daily to assure the ability to provide services to patients that are admitted to the facility.

Nuclear Medicine
Patients are transported to the Nuclear Medicine Department to allow for the completion of their examinations and returned to their room by the Radiology Department's Patient Transporter and/or Radiologic Technologist. Examinations are taken by a Radiologic Technologist with specialized training in Nuclear Medicine technology and presented for interpretation to the Radiologist. Reports of examinations are forwarded electronically to the patient's physician or health care provider and to the nursing station for placement in the patient's medical record. The Nuclear Medicine Department is staffed and/or on call 24 hours daily to assure the ability to provide services to patients that are admitted to the facility.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging services are available Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm by appointment only. The Centralized Scheduling Department can be reached at (304) 831-1928 to arrange for an appointment. Patients are transported to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Department to allow for the completion of their examinations and returned to their room by the Radiology Department's Patient Transporter and/or Radiologic Technologist. Examinations are taken by a Radiologic Technologist with specialized training in Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology and presented for interpretation to the Radiologist. Reports of examinations are forwarded electronically to the patient's physician or health care provider and to the nursing station for placement in the patient's medical record.

Mammography
Patients are transported to the Radiology Department to allow for the completion of their examinations and returned to their room by the Radiology Department's Patient Transporter and/or Radiologic Technologists. Needle-localization services are provided through admission to Same Day Surgery. Examinations are taken by a Radiologic Technologist with specialized training in Mammography and presented for interpretation to the Radiologist. Reports of examinations are forwarded electronically to the patient's physician or health care provider and to the nursing station for placement in the patient's medical record. The Mammography Department of Logan Regional Medical Center is in compliance with the Federal Drug Administration's Mammography Quality Standards Act (FDA/MQSA) with verification through annual inspections.

Radiology
Patients are transported to the Radiology Department to allow for the completion of their examinations and returned to their room by the Radiology Department's Patient Transporter and/or Radiologic Technologists. Examinations are taken by a Radiologic Technologist and presented for interpretation to the Radiologist. Reports of examinations are forwarded electronically to the patient's physician or health care provider and to the nursing station for placement in the patient's medical record. The Radiology Department is staff 24 hours daily to assure the ability to provide services to patients that are admitted to the facility.

Ultrasound
Patients are transported to the Ultrasound Department to allow for the completion of their examinations and returned to their room by the Radiology Department's Patient Transporter and/or Radiologic Technologist. Examinations are taken by a Radiologic Technologist with specialized training in Ultrasound technology and presented for interpretation to the Radiologist. Reports of examinations are forwarded electronically to the patient's physician or health care provider and to the nursing station for placement in the patient's medical record. The Ultrasound Department is staffed and/or on call 24 hours daily to assure the ability to provide services to patients that are admitted to the facility.
